Why was America so late in adopting English rules football?
April 1st, 2010 | by admin |I wondered this watching the recent friendly England v USA. match. After all, the majority of immigrants to the US in the 19th C. were from England, France, Germany, Italy etc., all football crazy nations so why did the sport not continue once they got to the US?
It is a mistery to me, many will tell you that America has other main sports like basketball, baseball and American football, but that is really no excuse at all as Australia has other main sports like: Rugby, Australian Rules football, Cricket etc. and they are still much better than the u.s. at football (soccer) even though their population is a bout 12 times less that of the united states, so it’s not because they have other sports, every other country has "other" sports, usa is not the only country that plays baseball and basketball. But the sport (football) is now growing and in about 5 to 10 years it will be a main sport in the united states, even if people say it won’t, the MLS has many passionate fans and the league is adding more teams each year, the youth are getting more into it, so things are happening.

We have always had the same rules. The US has been participating in World Cup for almost a century to my knowledge. When you grow up in America, you have many choices of sports to play. In other countries like England, basically your choices are football(soccer), cricket, or rugby. Plus, there are better coaches, facilities, leagues, etc. in other coutries. Development for young players is getting better in the US, but it is still just not as good. In order for US soccer to get better, the MLS has to expand and have minor leagues where each year you can get relegated or promoted based your season record. It needs time.

Because America was doing an Ireland and made it’s own sport calling it football despite the fact that the majority is with the hands?
