What is the difference between US and Canadian Football rules?

April 11th, 2010 | by admin |

-Field size is 110 yards long and 65 yards wide. End Zones are 20 yards deep.
-12 players on the field
-Three downs
-If you punt the ball into the endzone, the opposing team must run the ball out, or the punting team is award a single point
-A missed field goal could still result in a single point, unless the opposing team does not run the ball out of the endzone
-Punt or kick team must allow 5 yards for the player to catch the ball, instead of the fair catch rule.
-Three minute warning
-20 second play clocks
-Overall the Canadian game tends to be a bit faster than the American.

    big ones are…
    - only 3 downs
    - no fare catch
    - must leave 5 yards between you and the ball when covering a kick/punt, until it is touched
    - you get 1 point for missing a field goal if it is run out of the endzone

You only get a point for a kick into the endzone if the defence cannot or will not take it back into the field. American defence is baaaad since they don’t require them to do the work.

Also there is unlimited motion in the backfield. Americans only allow one player to move in the backfield, I believe.

OK, the other answers gave you the rule differences. I’ll just add those rules mean, basically, the CFL is a passing, high scoring and punting league. The NFL is more a running attack league with more emphasis on defense.

Each are exciting in their own way but more often than not the CFL’s Grey Cup (the championship game) is way better than the NFL’s Super Bowl.

The CFL is a superior game that is played by inferior athletes.
CFL requires a different type of athlete for almost every position.
Primarily because of everything that has been said so far.
But the NFL does have larger linemen, etc.
Ricky is finding out that the CFL does have D.
I LOVE the CFL. I appreciate the hype and excitement of the presentation of the NFL product, but when it comes to the actual GAME, CFL anytime.

    Just one man’s opinion
