What is the record for the fastest 40 yard dash in american football history ?

April 11th, 2010 | by admin |

4.21 seconds…. blazing speed. Fabian Washington had the fastest 40 ever at the combine with 4.25
Edit: my bad you said football… 4.21 is the fastest ever… maurice greene, whom I think some NFL teams have actually tried to recruit… so does that count?

Don’t know. How could you find out? They don’t usually post a guys 40 time anywhere that I know of. Of course you can take a guys word that his cousin holds the record at 4.08. But there’s no way to verify it.

Actually it’s 4.09 by Darrell Green, Washington Redskins Corner Back. He did it in Training Camp in 1986. To this day he still runs faster than most NFL players and he’s 42.
He was the NFL’s Fastest Man 4 years in a row. And has never been defeated, just stopping doing the competition.

Because there is no consistent way the NFL times these, it’s impossible to say.

The 40 is typically timed by manually operated stopwatches which are started whenever the runner starts running as opposed to something like a 100 meter race where the time starts on a signal and ends on an electronic signal at the finish line.

It takes about 0.1 seconds for an electrical impulse to get from the eye to the brain and from the brain to the fingers to actually work the stopwatch.

The fastest electronically timed 40 was 4.21 seconds by an Olympic level sprinter. Some claimed NFL players times are significantly under that.

40 times are as worthless as the heights and weights listed in media guides or announced attenance figures at games.

I don’t know, but if Chad Johnson does it, he will break the record.

Napoleon Kaufman ran a 4.1 in high school with blue jeans on. He didn’t pan out in the league because he played for the Raiders. But when he ever got into the open field you could forget about it. He was drafted out Washington U because of his speed because he was only 5′8" and 180 pounds when he was drafted. He was so fast they couldn’t pass on him. He ended his NFL career with a 4.9 rushing average which is amazing for anyone especially a 185 pound tailback.

The 4.1 was clocked by a large group of major college recruiters. So it’s a believable story.
