Why do college football coaches resign before they play the bowl game?
March 11th, 2010 | by admin |This seems very strange to me. College basketball coaches never resign between the end of the regular season and before the tournament. That would be completely ridiculous so why is it so matter-of-fact when a college football coach does it? Lloyd Carr, Dennis Francione, Houston Nutt have all quit this year and each of their teams is going to a bowl. It isn’t just this year either. This happens every year.
There are a few reasons they resign.
1) Recruiting- the bowl game is one last chance for recruits to see your new team
2) Offers from teams not going to bowls (ole miss got Nutt from Ark after their season was over)
3) Publicity- during the time between season and bowls teams want to capture the press that is still intensely covering college football.

Mainly recruiting. Most of these guys that sign letters of intent are going in based on the assumption that the coach that recruits him is going to coach him. Recruiting is a brutal business and the sooner a new coach can get in there and take charge the better off the program will be.

Maybe they don’t want to embarrass themselves right before the end of their term. All the Bowl games are televised nationally so anyone anywhere could be watching. And if they have a great head coaching career, who wants to go out with a lopsided loss? Thats all anyone will remember forever.

I think a lot of it is recruitment and a lot of it is that they are told to do so.

i agree…its really strange and seems tacky to me…nothing like pumping up a team before their bowl game by bailing on them!
